Sodium Hydroxide - Liquid

Caustic Soda - Liquid

Liquid Caustic is another product output of Chlor-Alkali factories along with Chlorine. It is generally produced in the form of solution as a result of electrolysis of sodium chloride. Chlorine gas is also produced during this electrolysis. If the water in the solution is evaporated, solid sodium hydroxide is obtained.

HANDLING

  • Persons handling caustic soda must always wear protective clothing, close-fitting chemical worker’s safety goggles, hard hat and rubber gloves, in order to avoid any contact with hand, skin or eyes.
  • Wash hands and exposed skin thoroughly after handling.
  • The product is not flammable, but is corrosive. Use corrosion-proof equipment.
  • Do not eat, drink or smoke when using this product.
  • Do not breathe its dust / smoke / gas / mist / vapor / spray.
  • Provide good ventilation in the work area. If during normal use the material presents a respiratory hazard, use only with adequate ventilation or wear appropriate respirator.
  • Keep away from acids.
  • Prevent formation of aerosols.
  • Empty containers retain product residue and can be hazardous. Do not reuse containers.
  • The floor, walls and other surfaces in the danger zone should be cleaned regularly.
  • Take precautionary measures against static discharge.
  • Always add the caustic soda to the warm water while mixing at a constant speed. If it is added too quickly or to a very cold or very hot liquid, a sudden increase occurs in temperature. This results in the formation of dangerous vapors causing sudden splashing or boiling.

SAFE STORAGE (Requirements for storage areas and containers)

  • Store in a corrosion-resistant container with a resistant inner liner.
  • Keep in a cool, dry, well ventilated place. The substance should be stored under dry conditions. Any contact with air and moisture should be avoided. The product is hygroscopic and in contact with air, it forms carbonate in the product together with moisture and carbon dioxide.
  • Store in original container protected from direct sunlight, away from incompatible materials and food and drink.
  • Incompatible materials: Do not store together or mix with water, acids, strong bases, strong oxidizing agents, peroxides, explosives, flammable liquids, organic halogen compounds and / or nitro methane.
  • Keep away from alkalis and metals.
  • Inappropriate packaging: Lead, aluminium, copper, tin, zinc, bronze.
  • Incompatible environments: Extremely high or low temperatures.
  • The minimum temperature allowed during transportation and storage is 15ºC, maximum temperature is 25 °C
  • Appropriate packaging: Steel, stainless steel, carbon steel, iron, nickel, synthetic material, polyethylene, glass, stoneware/porcelain.
  • This product is transported in barrels made of carbon steel, land and sea tankers.
  • The floor of the storage area must be leak-proof, acid-proof and non-absorbent.
  • Never add water to a corrosive. Always add corrosives to water. When mixing with water, stir small amounts in slowly.
  • Protect containers from damage.

DISPOSAL CONSIDERATIONS

  • Must not be disposed of together with household garbage.
  • Dispose of contents and container according to the approved collector's sorting instructions.
  • Whatever cannot be saved for recovery or recycling should be handled as hazardous waste and sent to an approved waste facility.
  • Do not dump into any sewers, on the ground, or into any body of water.
  • When recycling is not suitable, only incineration and landfill should be used.
